ABSTRACT The wood panel industry is constantly growing, being necessary the innovation in technologies and raw materials to improve the quality of the final product. Considering the shortage and pressure to decrease the dependence of wood, there is an interest in other renewable materials such as agricultural wastes. Among these wastes, coffee parchment is one which deserves notoriety. An alternative use for coffee parchment could be for production of particleboard in association with wood particles. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using coffee parchment for production of particleboard. The following percentages of wastes were used: 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50% in association to eucalyptus wood. The panels were produced with 8% of urea...

Mass and energy balance of the carbonization of babassu nutshell as affected by temperature PAB
Protásio,Thiago de Paula; Trugilho,Paulo Fernando; Napoli,Alfredo; Silva,Marcela Gomes da; Couto,Allan Motta.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the carbonization yield of babassu nutshell as affected by final temperature, as well as the energy losses involved in the process. Three layers constituting the babassu nut, that is, the epicarp, mesocarp and endocarp, were used together. The material was carbonized, considering the following final temperatures: 450, 550, 650, 750, and 850ºC. The following were evaluated: energy and charcoal yields, pyroligneous liquid, non-condensable gases, and fixed carbon. The use of babassu nutshell can be highly feasible for charcoal production. The yield of charcoal from babassu nutshell carbonization was higher than that reported in the literature for Eucalyptus wood carbonization, considering the final temperature of...

Particleboards produced with different proportions of Hevea brasiliensis: Residual wood valorization in higher value added products Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Faria,Douglas Lamounier; Eugênio,Tony Matheus Carvalho; Lopes,Daiane Erika; Protásio,Thiago de Paula; Mendes,Lourival Marin; Guimarães Junior,José Benedito.
ABSTRACT The use of the Hevea brasiliensis tree in latex rubber production has resulted in a consolidated role of this tree in the Brazilian economy. However, at the end of the productive cycle of the tree that lasts for approximately 25 years, the timber resulting from this venture has no added value and is usually used for the production of firewood. In order to introduce this species into the furniture and civil construction industry, the current study aimed to evaluate the quality of particleboard produced by adding Pinus oocarpa wood with Hevea brasiliensis wood in different ratios. The particleboards were produced with a nominal density of 0.60 g/cm³ and 8% (wt%) urea-formaldehyde resin and pressed at 160 °C for 8 min at a pressure of 4.0 MPa. The...

Physical attributes of distroferric red latosol under four eucalypt species over the long term Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Braga,Rafael Malfitano; Dias Junior,Moacir de Souza; Braga,Francisco de Assis; Protásio,Thiago de Paula.
Planted forests have been increasingly highlighted in the Brazilian scenario, maintaining status regarding their environmental effects, among them those related with soils. The objectives of this work were to evaluate and to compare the physical attributes of a typic distroferric Red Latosol under Eucalyptus cloeziana, E. grandis, E. Pilularis and Corymbia maculata coverage, 37 years after being planted at the Federal University of Lavras campus. The soil profiles were sampled down to 1 m depth in order to analyze their particle-size distribution, porosity, structure and water retention. The results were submitted to analysis of variance, Scott-Knott multiple means comparison test, correlations and linear regression. The profiles presented appropriated...

Quality and energetic evaluation of the charcoal made of babassu nut residues used in the steel industry Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Protásio,Thiago de Paula; Trugilho,Paulo Fernando; Mirmehdi,Seyedmohammad; Silva,Marcela Gomes da.
Brazil is the only country in the world that uses large scale charcoal in steel-making blast furnaces. Meantime, the monoculture plantations of Eucalyptus are not able to meet the demand for charcoal from the steel industries. Therefore, research is necessary, in order to use lignocellulosic residues for the production of charcoal with technological properties which are suitable for the reduction of iron ore. Given the above, the objective of this study was to evaluate the quality of charcoal which was made with babassu nut shell and designed for utilization in the steel industry in the function of the final carbonization temperature. All three layers of babassu nut shell (epicarp, mesocarp and endocarp) were used together. The initial temperature of the...

Thermal decomposition of torrefied and carbonized briquettes of residues from coffee grain processing Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Protásio,Thiago de Paula; Melo,Isabel Cristina Nogueira Alves de; Guimarães Junior,Mario; Mendes,Rafael Farinassi; Trugilho,Paulo Fernando.
The use of biomass has been recognized as a potential renewable energy and an alternative substitute that contributes to the decrease of fossil fuels consumption. Therefore, this research aimed to analyze the thermal behavior of briquettes made of residues from coffee grain processing in different conditions: in natura, torrefied and carbonized. Eucalyptus sawdust was used for comparison. The briquettes were carbonized considering final temperature of 450° C (kept for 30 min). The briquettes torrefaction was performed in an electric oven (muffle) using two heating rates until 250° C (kept 60 min). The thermal-gravimetric analysis was made in nitrogen atmosphere until the temperature of 600° C. The contents of fixed carbon and volatile matter of the fuels...

THERMAL STABILITY OF Pinus oocarpa AND MAIZE COB PARTICLEBOARDS Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Scatolino,Mário Vanoli; Protásio,Thiago de Paula; Mendes,Rafael Farinassi; Mendes,Lourival Marin.
Agricultural waste materials are generated in large quantities in Brazil. These can accumulate and cause serious environmental problems. One of the most commonly generated wastes in the brazilian agricultural culture is the maize cob. Being lignocellulosic in nature, the maize cob can find use as the raw material in the production of particleboards mainly concerned with furniture making. Therefore, studies regarding its thermal stability and fire resistance would be interesting. The aim of this study was to evaluate the combustibility and thermal stability of the particleboards produced from maize cob and Pinus oocarpa wood. The percentages in which maize cob was associated with Pinus oocarpa were 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%. The panels were produced using...
